How do I get rid of a phone number I don't need?

Release a number you're paying for, understand your window to get it back if you change your mind, and know what happens to its history.

Releasing a number cancels its monthly charge right away and disconnects it from your account. This works for any paid number, including your first one. You need to be an account administrator, with two-factor sign-in turned on: we ask for a code before anything this hard to undo.

Release a number

  1. Go to Calls, then Numbers.
  2. Find the number and click Release.
  3. Type the number to confirm. We ask you to type it out because this is genuinely hard to undo.

The monthly charge for that number stops immediately. Call history, recordings, and texts tied to that number stop being reachable, so export anything you need before you release it.

Change your mind

A released number stays reserved for you for about two weeks. During that window it shows up under Released numbers with a Reclaim button; reclaiming re-purchases it at the same monthly price. After that window it is gone for good and cannot be brought back.

If your first number won't release itself

Some accounts have a number that was included free from an earlier plan, with no monthly charge of its own to cancel. Those show as "Managed by support" instead of a Release button. Message us and we will release it for you.

Moving to another phone company instead

Releasing is not the same as moving your number elsewhere. If you want to keep using the number but with a different provider, that is a port-out, not a release: click Port out next to the number instead. The monthly charge keeps going until the transfer actually finishes, since the number is still yours until it is moved, and a number mid-transfer cannot be released out from under it.
