How do I get a phone number?
Buy a phone number in a couple of clicks, then connect it to texting, Voice AI, or a softphone. You can add one during your free trial.
A phone number is what turns on texting, calls, and a softphone for your account. Without one, your account runs on website chat only. It is billed monthly, shown to you before you pay, and you can remove it again any time.
You need to be an account administrator, with two-factor sign-in turned on, to add or remove a number. We ask for a code before anything that costs money.
Adding a number during your trial
You can add one phone number during your free trial. It costs $5 USD a month from the day you add it, so before you can buy one you need at least $10 of credit on your account, on top of two-factor sign-in. Both are checked when you press Add a number, and you are told which one is missing if either is. An extra number, or reclaiming a released one, waits until your plan starts.
Add your first number
- Go to Phone System, then Numbers.
- Click Add a number.
- Search by area code or by city.
- Pick the exact number you want from the list. Exact matches for your search show first, with nearby substitutes marked separately if there is nothing exact available.
- Click Continue to checkout. You are taken to Stripe to set up the monthly charge, and see the exact price before you pay.
Once payment goes through, you are brought back here and the number appears in your list within a few minutes. Refresh the page if it is not showing yet.
Add another number
The same flow works for a second or third number: click Add another number, search, pick one, and pay. There is a limit on how many extra numbers you can add yourself. Your main number never counts toward it, and numbers being ported in or out do. Message us if you need more than that. This is for paying accounts, during the trial you can add only the one number described above, an extra number unlocks once your plan starts.
Put it to work
A number does not do anything by itself. Connect it to whichever of these you need:
- Texting. Pick the number when setting up an SMS inbox. One number serves one SMS inbox at a time.
- Voice AI answering your calls.
- A softphone so you or your team answer calls yourselves.
Moving a number you already own
If you already have a business number with another phone company, you do not have to give it up. Read Can I keep my phone number when I move to Peakify?.
