How do I edit a contact's details?
Change a contact's name, phone or email right from the inbox side panel or Team management, without opening the contact page, or open the contact to update everything else: tags, service and marketing consent.
Open the contact, click Edit, change what needs changing, save, or change their name, phone or email right from the inbox side panel without leaving the conversation. Everyone on your team can edit a contact's name, phone, email, tags and which service they asked for. Only an admin can change whether they have agreed to marketing.
Quick edit from the inbox
You do not need to open the contact page to fix a name, phone number or email. In the inbox side panel, click directly on First name, Last name, Email or Phone, type the new value, and save, on desktop or from the actions sheet on a phone. A pencil button, "Edit customer", sits next to Delete under their name and opens First name for editing if you would rather start there. Each field saves on its own the moment you confirm it, so you never lose a change to one field while fixing another.
If a save is refused, for example a phone number or email already used by a different contact, the panel shows the reason and keeps the old value, it never silently reverts or guesses. The customer's name updates everywhere you can see it right away, including the conversation list and the thread header.
In Team management, the same Edit icon under the customer's name opens their Details tab, which is already editable in place the same way.
Tags, which service they asked for, and marketing consent still need the full contact page, covered below.
Find the contact
Type in the search box above your Contacts list. It looks at first name, last name, email and phone together, so you can type the contact however you remember them:
- A full name, in either order: "Maya Thompson" or "Thompson Maya" finds Maya Thompson, not every Maya.
- Accents and capitals do not matter: "jose" finds José, and "orsted" finds Ørsted.
- A phone number with spaces, brackets or dashes: "(204) 555-0150", "204 555 0150" or just "555 0150" all find the same person.
- Symbols are searched as typed: "_" or "%" finds only contacts that contain that character.
The same search runs when you pick a contact to merge, and when you choose who to message from New message.
Filter and page through the list
Next to the search box, two lists narrow what you see. Status shows everyone, only Subscribed, or only Unsubscribed. Consent has four choices: All consent, Has consent, Said no, and Unknown. Unknown means nobody has recorded an answer for that contact yet. The three specific choices add up to All consent.
Below the list, First and Last jump to the first and last page, and Previous and Next move one page at a time. "Rows per page" lets you show 20, 50 or 100 contacts at a time. Each contact appears once across the pages, whatever you sort by.
The tick boxes belong to the page you are looking at. When you change the page, the search, the sort, a filter or the number of rows, the ticks clear, so a bulk action such as Add Tag or Delete only ever touches contacts you can see. Long names are shortened with "..." in the list; hold your pointer over one to read it in full.
Edit a contact
- Open the contact from your Contacts list, or click the pencil icon on their row.
- Click Edit, or go straight there from the contact's own page.
- Update any of: first name, last name, email, phone, tags, service.
- Click Save Changes. You land back on the contact's page with the new details showing immediately.
Recording which service they asked for
The Service dropdown is where you record which one of your services this customer came to you for. Pick it from the list and click Save Changes. Choose "No service yet" to leave it blank, or to clear one you set earlier.
The list comes from Settings, Services. If you have not set any services up yet, the dropdown is not shown at all, so set them up there first and it appears here.
You can pick one service per customer. Renaming a service in your settings does not disturb anyone it is already recorded against: they simply start showing the new name.
Your AI assistant can fill this in for you. When a customer whose contact has no service yet says clearly which one they want, on any message, the assistant records it on their contact. It only ever fills a blank one, it never changes a service you picked yourself, and if what they asked for does not clearly match exactly one of your services it leaves the field empty rather than guessing. You can always set it, change it or clear it here.
Set the service for many customers at once
If a lot of customers have no service yet, you do not have to edit them one by one. An admin can set it for a whole group:
- On the Contacts list, tick the customers. You can tick up to 100 at a time.
- In the bar that appears, click Set service.
- Pick the service and click "Set for" and the number of customers.
Peakify saves the service on every customer you ticked and then puts each one on that service's journey, the same way it does when you change it on one contact. Customers who have not started their current journey move onto the new one. Customers who have already started keep the journey they are on. When it is done, a message tells you how many were moved, how many kept their journey, and how many are not on a journey because they have no phone number or email.
A few things to know:
- The button only shows for an admin, and only once you have added services in Settings, Services.
- A customer who already has that service is left alone, so nothing is sent twice.
- There is no bulk way to clear a service. To clear one, edit that customer.
- If nobody could be changed, for example because the customers were deleted or belong to another organization, you see a message saying so instead of a success.
Changing marketing consent
Marketing Consent has three choices: Not recorded (nobody has asked this contact), Agreed to marketing, and Declined. Saving a contact never changes it unless you pick a different choice yourself. Once an answer is recorded you can switch between Agreed and Declined, but you cannot put it back to Not recorded.
Only your organization's admin can change it. If you are not an admin, the choice is greyed out and says so, so you can still edit everything else on the contact. Ask your admin if the answer needs changing.
If it says the email is already used
Two contacts in your organization cannot share an email address. If you see this while editing, another contact already has that address, most likely you have found a duplicate. See How do I merge two contacts that are actually the same person?
If it says someone else changed this customer
When you edit a name, email, phone, preferred contact or lead source in place, Peakify checks that the field still holds what you saw. If a teammate changed that same field a moment ago, your save is stopped and you see "This customer was changed by someone else. Reload to see the latest." Your edit is not applied and the field refreshes to show what your teammate entered. Look at it, then make your change again if it is still needed. Two people editing different fields never block each other.

More in Contacts
The other guides people read alongside this one.
- How do I add a contact by hand?
Give it a name, phone number or email, whatever you have, and it's ready to message straight away.
- How do I import a list of contacts from a CSV file?
Upload a CSV, check the column matches, and Peakify skips anything that already exists.
- How do I merge two contacts that are actually the same person?
Pick the duplicate, review what will move, and merge it into the contact you're keeping. Depending on your account, Peakify also points out likely duplicates for you.
- How do I delete a contact, or handle a request to delete someone's data?
Delete moves the contact and their chats to Deleted customers for 30 days, where you can restore them. After that they are erased for good.
Did this not cover it?
