How do I attach a file to a question in the AI Workspace?

You can attach a document to a message in the AI Workspace so the assistant can read it before answering, useful for a transcript, a statement, or anything else you want it to work from directly.

Attach a file

1. Start the chat first, either by sending your first message or by clicking New chat. A file always belongs to one particular chat, so there needs to be one open before you can attach anything. Until then the paperclip button is greyed out with a tooltip explaining why.
2. Click the paperclip icon next to the message box.
3. Pick a file from your computer.

It uploads right away and appears as a small chip above the message box with its file name. You don't need to do anything else, it's ready for your next message in this chat.

What happens after you attach it

The chip tells you plainly what the assistant can actually do with the file:

• No note under the name means it read the file fine.
• "Long file, only the first part will be read" means it's readable but too long to read in full.
• "No readable text found" means the file has nothing extractable in it.
• "Stored, but the assistant can't read this type" means the file is saved and downloadable, but it's a type (like most images) the assistant can't read the contents of yet.
• "Couldn't read this file" means something went wrong reading it, try a different copy or format.

Limits

• Up to 5 files per message.
• Each file up to 4 MB. A file over that size is rejected before it even uploads, so you're not left waiting.
• An empty file is rejected outright.

Removing or downloading a file

Click the small x on a chip to remove it before you send. Click a file's name at any time to download it again, the link works for a few minutes, click it again if it's stopped working.

Files stay with that chat

A file you attach is remembered for the rest of that one chat. If you ask a follow-up question later in the same conversation, the assistant still has the earlier files available, up to the last 10 you sent. If you attach a lot of long documents across one conversation, there's a shared limit on how much text it can hold at once, if it has to stop reading partway through a later file, the file's chip tells you so rather than pretending it read the whole thing.
